About the movie Somewhere In Time...?

This is a fictional, but well acted movie made in 1980, with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. If you have seen this movie, did you wonder where the actual beginning was. Was it when the young man first saw the picture of the young lady and then went back in time to 1912 and first met her, or could it have started a different way ? I asked this because at the beginning of the movie , the young man did not remember anything about what happened with his adventure back in time, but the old lady ( who was the same young one in 1912) remembered him right away and walked over to him to give him the gold watch that he gave her in 1912. Where exactly did it all start, it was a circle that had a sad ending but not a precise beginning, or at least didn't seem to. What are your thoughts ? Thanks.
